From time to time, as part of my job as a filmmaker, I get to do some fun stuff. This video would fit into that category. Having done a bunch of videos for Kosmic Sound (a music retailer / distributor in Perth) they gave me the chance to step it up a level and do something a little more involved than the normal tutorial style videos I usually shoot for them.
This video features my good friend Zeke Ugle performing super human manoeuvres on Native Instrument’s new Z2 mixer. He is a freak – as anyone who’s seen one of his shows or videos will attest. So this made my life pretty easy really. I stumbled on an impressive looking empty warehouse, hired a couple of lights, turned up with no prep at all and made up all the shots on the spot. Of course I had a rough idea in my head about what I wanted but doing everything as it happens on the night is definitely the fun way of making films in my opinion – much more like making music. Do something when inspiration strikes.
Not doing much prep did make the edit a bit confusing but that’s another story and we got there in the end. I spent about a month on the effects. Mainly because I started doing them in 3d and then decided that I didn’t like how they looked and scrapped everything I’d done. Once I’d decided to go with the white/2d treatment it was probably a couple of weeks work to complete the animation.
Ok, that’s enough talk, hope you enjoy…
